Puff activated pens are what they’re called. When the pen is activated, the internal circuit switch closes, completing the circuit with the battery and coil. Now for a more technical explanation of how these devices work:

7. Flow or inhalation – A pressure difference is created between an air inlet and your lungs when you inhale through the mouthpiece. The air inlet is typically found near the bottom of the tank or device. Because of the pressure difference, air flows into the inlet and out through the mouth piece. The air flows through the center of the coil, which houses the vapour. This vapour enters the mouth and lungs. There is continuous vaporisation and air flow as long as the user draws from the pen. Most pens have a safety timer and have a maximum activation time of about 10 seconds. This safeguard prevents the coil from burning. After all, it does get hot.
